History of the world’s oldest restaurant

Although the Chinese invented restaurants, the word itself was created by the French. One of the oldest functioning restaurants in the world is BOTIN. It is located in the capital of Spain – Madrid, and enters the Guinness World Record as the world’s oldest restaurant. It has long become one of the major attractions of Madrid along with the other antiquities. The tourists often come here not to eat but just to make a few photos. This restaurant has invited people since 1725.

In 1763, the poor artist from the province came to BOTIN and got a job of dishwasher (as he wanted to earn money for the paints). His name was Francisco, and a surname – Goya. Now, this name is famous to almost everyone, every to those who are far from the world of art. Another big name, related to the restaurant BOTIN, is the name of Ernest Hemingway; he described this same (his favorite) restaurant in his book “The Sun Also Rises”. All these bright historical moments make BOTIN very attractive for the tourists. Moreover, the 300-year-old history indicates that this restaurant must have a great wine cellar.

Earlier, when it was no sense to open the establishment that doesn’t allow spending there a few nights (which is especially relevant for the travelers), there was an in on the second floor of the building. Now it is not necessary, and the restaurant became just a cozy place with its unique color; the atmosphere of BOTIN was appreciated not only by the common tourists the residents of Madrid, but also many celebrities, who have filled more than one guest book for 300 years. By the way, the filled visitor’s books are donated to the museum, and then replaced by the new ones, that, however, don’t stay empty for long.

BOTIN was recognized as the world’s oldest restaurant due to the fact that it is located in the same (constant) place for hundreds of years. Meanwhile, the restaurant’s founder, the French Jean Botin, had no idea that the restaurant he created in the building he purchased for 150 ducats, would last for so long and obtain the status of one of the main attractions of Madrid. However, the restaurant is still flourishing and pleases its visitors with tasty dishes, excellent wine cellars and interesting history.
