Christmas traditions. “Caga Tió”

Christmas traditions. “Caga Tió”

The most wonderful time of the year, Christmas, is approaching! Children and adults are excited about the holiday, and, of course, presents. Usually, kids are waiting for the surprises from Papa Noel (Santa Claus) and The Magi. They write them long letters with a list of all their wishes. Bu, apart from fairytale characters, these there is another guest of honor – Caga Tió.
This guy represents a small log with two legs and painted face. Kids try to protect Caga Tió from the cold by putting the hat on his head and covering him with a blanket. They even give him different sweets!

And not surprisingly, as it defines what kind of gifts or sweet they will get from Caga Tió for Christmas. Besides, he usually makes it in a pretty unusual way – he makes a “doodie”. Usually, Caga Tió brings only small surprises, such as sweets, while Papa Noel gives more substantive ones.

The ritual of “begging” presents is very interesting. Children beat Caga Tió with stick until he starts to give them toys or sweets, singing him Christmas songs. The better children look after Caga Tió, the more surprises them should expect!
