Architectural sights of Madrid

Madrid is one of the most popular tourist routes. This city is interesting and attractive for its history, a great number of architectural monuments, old buildings of the times of kings, beautiful squares, palaces and monasteries.

Madrid doesn’t have a main street, but it is rich in boulevards. Walking through them, you can admire the local architecture.

  1. The Arch of Victory with the chariot at the top symbolizes the victory of nationalists. It was built in the Empire style.
  2. The Railway Station Atocha was designed and built on a special project. Its visitors get into the huge greenhouse with many plants. Well maintained and beautifully decorated park with the mosaic paths and comfortable benches always disposes to rest. And on the weekends the tourists can buy memorable gifts in the stall opening at this time.
  3. You can see the monument in the mixed style of baroque and classicism, designed by Sabatini in Independence Square – Alcala Gate.
  4. Palacio de Santa Cruz is a huge building, designed by numerous architects. Its façade is made of white stone and decorated with the towers on the sides. After reconstruction, it became the location of Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
  5. Pay attention to the famous Eastern Square. Here you can see the monument to the King Phillip IV on horseback. It is the first building, where the horse leans only on the back hooves. Next to it, you can see the green squares with the statues of famous Spanish friars.
  6. Cathedral of Madrid is a really monumental edifice. The first stones of its foundation were laid more than 200 years ago. The main part of the building is designed in the neo-gothic style, but some parts were made in baroque. You should also pay attention to the altar made of green marble.
  7. It is very easy to find Real Basílica de San Francisco el Grande (“The Royal Basilica of San Francisco el Grande”). It is located in the center of the capital and was built in the XIII century at the place of the former convent. The circular shape of the building and its dome is made in neo-classicism. And in the chapels you can see the pictures of the greatest painters.
  8. The church of San Isidro dates back to the XVII century and is an example of baroque architecture. It is famous as it keeps the relic of the patron saint, and was created for the members of the Jesuits Order.
  9. Palacio de Liria is surrounded by the thick greenery, but its main wealth is located outside it. This is a huge warehouse of the Spanish riches: incredible tapestries and the pictures of the famous artists. All the exhibition works are classified by the halls with the same sources of art.
