What to see in Madrid in 7 days?
The royal palace with weapon museum, magnificent cathedrals, famous Prado Museum with the paintings of famous artists, lush parks and a vibrant nightlife- that’s what you can see in the capital of Spain.
As well-known proverb says, “Sometimes the day, spent in other places, gives the person more than a few years of living at home”. And if you have seven such days, that’s even better. Therefore, we decided to fully enjoy one of the most beautiful capitals of the world- Madrid, and its surroundings.
To say that this city exceeded all our expectations would be an understatement. Beautiful architecture with a lot of parks and squares is an excellent combination for such a big city.
Madrid is different in the morning and at night, when the lights go on. In summer the capital of Spain is peaceful and relaxed. Most people are hiding in the shadows, sitting in the restaurants or cafes, or going to the museum and palaces. But at night, the whole city wakes up. You can hear the music coming from the bars; the streets are noisy and crowded. All the important buildings of the city are beautifully illuminated. There are always a lot of young people by the fountains. They are sitting on the on the concrete parapet and the lawns nearby. They take the bottles of mineral water or coke (but not beer). They are laughing and talking very loud.
In the evening, the loving couples, young families with small children and old people walk in the parks. Many of them feel free to lie on the lawns. When we see this, we also want to lie down on the soft grass. So, we threw our bags and laid next to them. And when we stood up, we noted that our clothes remained clear.
There are many fountains with potable water in the city, so the people can use them in the heat. We have also tried it – and the water was good. We also tasted the traditional Spanish “tapas” – appetizers to wine or beer. They are very similar to our “multilevel” sandwiches. In Spain, it is common to spend the whole night changing the bars and trying the special “tapas” to wine or beer and talk very loud.
Madrid has many museums of the national delicacy- “jamon” (ham) – cured pork leg. The visitors of such “museums” drink beer or other beverages and snack on “tapas”- pieces of ham or other culinary delights. The essential attribute of such museums are many pork legs, hanging from the ceiling. If you want, you can buy the piece of it or the whole leg. The cost of 1 kg of ham is from 20 euro.
The residents of Madrid have special morning tradition. They always drink coffee before going to work. And not anywhere, but in the cafeterias that you can find at every step. These establishments are open at 8:00 a.m. You can also order some pastry to your coffee. The choice is large – there are tens of different cakes. Therefore, every morning we gladly joined the local residents, choosing different coffee every time, as it’s so interesting!
Having arrived in Madrid, we couldn’t miss the chance to visit its main attractions – Palacio Real (the Royal Palace), Cathedral and Prado Museum that keeps the picture of famous artists from Spain and other European countries.
The palace of Spanish monarchs impressed us with the luxury of interior, the cathedral – with its great architecture, and the museum – with the size of its collection. We went to Prado Museum 2 hours before its closure and got free tickets. As at the end of each day (apart from Monday), everybody can see the masterpieces of the world painting without paying a cent. At another time, the cost of entrance ticket is 14 euro for adult and 7 euro for the children.
