The recipe of “Sangria”
The universal drink “Sangria” can be prepared under any conditions and from different components. Everything depends on your own preferences and fantasy.
The Spaniards think that “Sangria” is an addictive taste bomb, as once you try it, it is hard to stop. “Sangria” is so tasty and fragrant that it’s easy to drink 2 liters at once (however, it will be difficult to get out of a chair).
Actually, “Sangria” is something like punch. It is a mixture of wine, water and fruits. Almost all Spanish families prepare this refreshing drink. “Sangria” is also popular in Portugal and Italy. Therefore, this drink has many variations.
According to one version, this drink appeared in Spain in the VIII century A.D. The Moors who invaded the Iberian Peninsula, drunk a lot of this wine to cool and escape the heat. However, once when the grape harvest was poor, and there were almost no wine, the Moors beaten the peasant out of aggression, until someone decided to treat the army to the drink made of wine, fruits and water. However, many farmers died in that period. Therefore, the drink was called “Sangria”, which means “bloodletting”. According to the other legend that “Sangria” was invented by the Italian soldier Helio Gabala, who wanted to become a wine-maker in the XV century A.D. Because of the bad harvest in their vineyards, the soldier decided to make wine from oranges and lemons, which abound in the Southern countries. Being on duty in Spain to make money, Helio Gabala added the pieces of fruit to the wine and claimed that he could make wine from citrus. When the Spaniards saw this drink, they screamed: “El Sangre del Diablo” (the blood of the devil). They called the soldier “warlock” and burned them at the stake. However, the Spaniards loved the cocktail. In honor of these bloody events, the fruity wine was called “Sangria”. The drink became especially popular in the 1960s, when the ready mixture “for the lazy” appeared on the store shelves and bars, thereby making this drink popular in the USA and Europe. Across the country, people have experimented with adding different fruits and spices to the drink. The tourists that brought wine from Spain, Italy and Portugal made this wine even more famous.
