St George’s Day (Dia de San Jorge). Feast of Rose and Book

23rd of April is an unusual day for the residents of Barcelona – St George’s Day. This holiday is usually associated with the legend about how the Saint George killed the murderous dragon to win the heart of the princess. After defeating the monster, he gave the princess a beautiful red rose that grew from the drop of blood of the killed beast. Of course, the hero won the hand of princess in marriage. This beautiful legend created the custom to give the girls flowers on the 23rd of April as a sign of their feelings.

However, this day is also related to the other holiday– the World Book Day (to pay homage to two great writers- Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare). Therefore, another traditional gift for this holiday is books. Barcelona participates actively in the holiday. The famous market Las Ramblas is filled with the tents offering different books (which on this day are sold like hotcakes). You can find literature for all tastes to treat yourself and your loved ones, and see your favorite writers and get their autograph. The market is full of tourists and local residents – everybody wants to take part in the celebration.

Don’t miss the chance to visit Barcelona on St George’s Day, when the city is filled with the atmosphere of love and beauty!
