New Year in Spain
New Year in Spain
Now, when it’s not a problem to obtain a visa and travel abroad for weekends or holidays, it became very popular to spend the New Year holidays in hot countries by the ocean or in Europe. This is a unique opportunity to see how the celebration of New Year on different continents, participate in traditional entertainments and, of course, have a good rest.
People often go to Spain in summer to combine the summer rest by the sea with an opportunity to visit the attractions of this country. However, it is not less interesting to visit Spain during the New Year holidays. At this time of year, you can visit the traditional festivals that can’t leave anyone indifferent. The Spaniards are temperamental and emotional. It is therefore no surprise that the celebration of New Year is very exciting.
The first thing you’ll notice are the mass festivals. The night before New Year, the residents of Spain go to the streets of their cities to celebrate the festival with their relatives, neighbors, acquaintances and of strangers. The Christmas trees glow in the main squares of the city. Spanish people are used to celebrate holidays in the streets (and not at home), so the main events happen outdoors. The pyrotechnic shows continue during the whole festival. You will get the opportunity to take part in the competitions. For example, there is such a competition as bringing the lonely guests of the party together.
You will also find a holiday table (or rather traditional Spanish dishes) very uncommon. You won’t see a rich feast with many delicacies. In this country, traditional New Year dinner consists of light meals (salads, fish and vegetable dishes), different wines and, of course, desserts and fruits (especially the grapes that people took with them when they go to the square to see in the New Year). It is believed that you will be luckier in the New Year, if you manage to eat 12 grapes during the chime of bells.
Of course, the New Year’s night will come to an end, but the entertainments and joyous events of the holidays will last much longer. You can see the museums, galleries and stroll on the boardwalks, visit the sales of the most famous brands, and just walk on the desert beach and listen to the sound of waves.
