Food prices in Spain

This time, we want to speak about food prices in Spain. We think many tourists visiting this country for the first time will find it interesting.

Prices are relevant for the end of July – beginning of August 2014.

The first thing we noted is that the price of seafood is much lower than in our homeland. 1 kg of refrigerated mussels costs 1.88 euro, canned mussels with oil (111 g) – 0.9 euro/can.

Meat, sausage, dairy products

Jamon Serrano (120 g) costs 2 euro, sausage with pepper “Chorizo” (225 g) – 1.35 euro, mix of sausages (200 g) – 1.63 euro, dry cured salami with white mold– 2 euro/piece, milk half hard sheep’s cheese – 2.99 euro per 300 g, pre-packaged pizza– 2.4 euro/piece, grilled chicken wings- 2.9 euro per 400 g, grilled soft cheese with mold (40 g) – 1.09 euro.

Olive oil “Arbequina Extra Virgin” 0.5 l – 2.97 euro/bottle.

Let’s move on to the fruits. If they’re not cheap, this means they’re just not seasonal. So, oranges – 1.8 euro/kg, lemon – 1.75 euro/kg, nectarine and fig peach– 3.5 euro/kg, kiwi – 3.75 euro/kg, wild cherry – 5.50 euro/kg, apples – 1.60 euro/kg, watermelon – 1.3 euro/kg, coconut– 1.35 euro/piece, bananas – 1.95 euro/kg. Strawberry turned out the most affordable– 1.1 euro per 480 g (package).

As for the vegetables, onion costs 0.95 euro/kg, potato – from 0.80 to 1 euro/kg, tomato- 0.8-1.5 euro/kg, cucumbers – 0.7-0.9 euro/kg, cabbage – 0.9 euro/kg.

Ice-cream and sweets. Ice-cream in the supermarket is not sold at retail (per unit). Usually, you can buy it only in package- from 4 to 6 cones. We paid 1.65 euro per package (6 cones – 720 ml). You can also buy it in the street talls at the same price, but for 1 cone. The bar of dark chocolate (150-200 g) costs 1.2 euro. Spanish “turron” is usually sold in packages (150-200 g) from 1.1-1.3 euro/piece (if it contains peanuts).

The cheapest bread is baguette (from 0.4 to 0.75 euro per 80 g), pastry (croissants, etc.) – 1.2-1.5 euro/ package of 200 g.
