Medical care in Spain
The Spanish health-care system is considered one of the best and the most modern in the world. Health services are almost equally accessible to the entire population, as they are financed by taxes. 94 % of population has the right for free and quality health care. The public hospitals provide first aid at any time and in every part of our country. They are all have the latest equipment, and the medical personnel tend to be highly qualified. All residents of Spain can buy medicines at a large discount, (if they were prescribed by the household doctor). You can see the doctor within the days after making an appointment. Public hospitals pay about half the cost of the drugs, prescribed after your discharge from hospital. The older persons (over 65) have the right to get free medicines.

Apart from public clinics, Spain has many private health centers, visited only by a small sector of the population (mostly in the tourist centers – Madrid and Barcelona). You should visit the private center, if you need a special consultation. You may be also sent to this center in case of overload of specialists in the public hospitals. If necessary, you may also go to the private clinics in case of emergency.
